  1. Lately there's been a lot of interest in high definition video for FPV piloting. Especially for drone racing. Who wouldn't want a true widescreen display with real HD resolution? The good news is that several different HD FPV systems have recently appeared. These range from the DiY WiFiBroadcast project to ready-to-use products such as Connex Prosight. There are others too. But these new systems are digital implementations. And the ugly warts from data compression, latency, and weak RF signal behavior are bothersome to some of us. Enough so that I expect it will turn off a lot of potential users that will simply keep flying with their existing analog FPV system. I'm here to open up a discussion about doing it a different way. Instead of digital, why not HD analog video? It's possible; The technology is similar to our existing CVBS (NTSC/PAL) video devices and video processing chip sets are readily available. It just needs someone to dig in and develop a package specific for FPV. I would like to light some fire and offer inspiration to tackle the challenge! So let's talk about it.

  3. hello all, i've been wanting to upgrade the receiver in the skyzone SJ-V01 almost from the minute i got them. i am a fan of wide screen views, i was never good at using the Fat shark goggles. The SJ-V01 goggles are similar to the Head play goggles in size and shape, maybe even monitor. the thing that head plays lacked was a true diversity receiver. the SJ-V01 already had a diversity receiver and it worked very well. but with all the new improvements in receivers these days, and having had these SJ-V01 goggles for so long, i started to make the transition over to the Furious FPV receiver. I didnt think it would be too difficult to do, until i looked at the wiring. not sure why the engineers at skyzone felt using all the same color wire was helpful or maybe a deterrent of some form from people snooping on how they were constructed, but this is my dilemma. When searching the interwebs, trying to see if any one had made this upgrade, i didnt find much help. really the only information about these goggles was how to add a DVR to them. i did do that and will seek to repeat that installation of a DVR after the Furious FPV True D goggles are up and running. i am pretty sure i know where all those wires are. I found this forum and read a post by @Mr.RC-Cam titled HeadPlay HD Goggle Upgrade: Add 5.8GHz Diversity & DVR, link here: In that post, it was very well explained how to accomplish this with the Headplay goggles. it shed some light on my task, but not enough. i've already taken apart the Skyzones, so there is really no going back. hopefully the pictures that follow will be clear enough to help figur this all out. there are No pinouts that i know of, Skyzone wouldnt release their schematics, so we're all poking around in the dark here. get out your pitch forks and torches, we're going monster hunting!! This first picture is pretty close to the Headplay Power in connections. this is the pinout i picked up on the web to install the DVR. the only thing i will use here is the power in which are pins 3 & 4. the Next two pictures are the diversity receiver. a five pin connector is used to bring in power to the receiver but also to provide video/audio out as indicated by the pinout photo.
  4. Good news! The Eachine ProDVR V1.6 board's nasty black screen (weak signal blackout) problem can be fixed. The bad news is that the fix requires SMD rework soldering tools and experienced hands. The solution requires removing the shanzhai Chinese Video Decoder IC (marked GM7150BC) and replacing it with the official TI part (marked TVP5150). But wait! Before you do that there may be a simpler solution. The latest rumors (Jan 2017) suggest that banggood has sold all their stock of the V1.6 hardware (with black screen) and are back to selling the old V1.4 that does not black screen. Don't yell at me if its not true -- do some research and decide for yourself. Ok, so you want to roll up your sleeves and do the DiY chip fix. Photos below show the process.
  5. My HeadPlay HD goggle hacking continues. The recent Diversity Receiver / DVR upgrade was a success so now it's time to upgrade its plastic Fresnel lens. Replacing it with glass optics makes the image look substantially better. There's a commercially made glass lens for the HeadPlay HD goggles that can be purchased for about $40 USD. But I'm a DiY guy. So I did it for under $2 with the help of my 3D printer. Here's what the DiY glass lens upgrade looks like: The retrofit does not alter the HeadPlay goggles in any way. You can remove it and go back to the Fresnel lens at any time. Not sure why you would want to do that, but being able to restore the factory configuration is a nice feature of this upgrade.
  6. Earlier this year a fellow [befinitiv] started a personal blog that follows the development of his DiY Wi-Fi based FPV video system. It uses a unique Wi-Fi communication mode named wifibroadcast. Rather than repeat what he's written, I suggest starting here: https://befinitiv.wordpress.com/wifibroadcast-analog-like-transmission-of-live-video-data/ In summary, it is a low cost Hi-Def FPV video system with low latency. Range is expected to be about 1km with upgraded antennas. What is cool is that it uses easy-to-buy components and has simple wiring requirements (connect some cables). It should work with any FPV monitor or goggles that have an HDMI video input. BTW, I learned about this project last month from hackaday: http://hackaday.com/2015/06/13/wifibroadcast-makes-wifi-fpv-video-more-like-analog/ Here's a video of the developer's first FPV test flight from May 2015: I've ordered all the components I think are needed and the cost was well under $200 USD (for everything but a monitor). Below is a photo of the two boxed Raspberry Pi's and TP-link WiFi dongles that the postal carrier dropped off a few days ago. I'm still waiting for the HD camera and some cables to arrive. Then the fun begins! It's a good thing my recently built DiY FPV Goggles support HDMI video.
  7. EDIT June-03-2015 / UPDATE: Had my first flights with the prototype DiY 3D Printed FPV Goggles and it was awesome. Fantastic image quality, better than anything I've flown with before. The huge 70° field of view (FOV) is incredible. Material choices have been cardboard, foam board, duct tape, snow ski goggles, and so on. Ignoring the primitive look of my creations, the weak link was always the disappointing video quality of the LCD displays I tried. I wanted a video image that looked better than the commercially made FPV glasses, but at best I could only achieve the same (and sometimes worse) resolution. The monitors I tried all had excellent advertised specs, but in reality were nowhere near the visual resolution the China suppliers claimed them to be. But recently that issue seems to have turned around and now there are some affordable 5 to 7 inch LCD monitors that have the pixel resolution I want. So it's time to step up my game and create some nice looking FPV goggles that work better than anything I've worn before. I now have a 3D printer and AutoDesk's 123D CAD program. My goal is to create the world's best DiY 3D printed FPV goggles. I can dream, can't I? First on the list was to choose a small LCD monitor that had trustworthy resolution specs and good resistance to the lost signal "blue-screen" issue. After reviewing data sheets I took the gamble and ordered this low cost 7-inch IPS LCD panel / board set: http://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/6656997443.html?orderId=67151909787970 (See updated note at bottom of this post) The monitor is on its way to me. Until I test it out I have no idea if it will acceptable. Fingers are crossed. UPDATE / EDIT Oct-04-2015: The cost of the LCD kit from the aliexpress supplier has substantially increased, so it is no longer a valid choice. But there are other suppliers for a LCD kit that has the VST29.01B control board and N070ICG LCD panel. If it has a different layout then my keypad enclosure part will not fit it.
  8. FPV'ers like bargains. Fortunately there's an endless variety of stuff from the offshore vendors at prices that are hard to resist. But the low cost Chinese FPV parts are a lot like a box of chocolates; You never know what you're gonna get. Recently I saw that Banggood had a 5.8GHz 600mW vTx for only $27 USD. That's a crazy low price so I had to order one. Part of the fun is discovering what kind of "chocolate" I'll get. Spoiler alert: This one was not a tasty treat.   9. The FAA is doing their best to kill the FPV hobby in the USA. Based on their latest interpretation of the model aircraft rules, using FPV goggles to pilot a model aircraft is illegal effective June-23-2014. The FAA insists that the pilot must have unobstructed view of the model aircraft during flight. Beginning June-25-2014, the public has 30 days to provide their comments on this disturbing gov action. Here's the FAA's own words that specifically precludes Goggles: By definition, a model aircraft must be “flown within visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft.” P.L. 112-95, section 336©(2).1 Based on the plain language of the statute, the FAA interprets this requirement to mean that: (1) the aircraft must be visible at all times to the operator; (2) that the operator must use his or her own natural vision (which includes vision corrected by standard eyeglasses or contact lenses) to observe the aircraft; and (3) people other than the operator may not be used in lieu of the operator for maintaining visual line of sight. Under the criteria above, visual line of sight would mean that the operator has an unobstructed view of the model aircraft. To ensure that the operator has the best view of the aircraft, the statutory requirement would preclude the use of vision-enhancing devices, such as binoculars, night vision goggles, powered vision magnifying devices, and goggles designed to provide a “first-person view” from the model.   10. The Hexenbiest DiY open source project is an Arduino shield for a FPV ground station. It has A/V ports for up to six video receivers, OSD (on screen display) for menus and telemetry data, several user interface control methods (IR, R/C, Joystick), multiple video outputs, support for an external camera / mic, and more. I will post the hardware design (schematics and BOM) and offer technical advice. I even have a small number of unpopulated PC boards (without components) I can offer at low cost to help move things along. But due to their limited number these are reserved for rc-cam members that have the skills to solder the SMD components and are serious about contributing code to help launch the project. I'm here to drum up some excitement and invite creative programmers to help build their dream FPV ground station in the spirit of open source sharing. But this won't happen without software (and hardware) contributions from like-minded hobbyists. The project is called Hexenbiest. It is configured as a plug-in motherboard "shield" for an Arduino MEGA2560-R3 microprocessor board. Sorry to disappoint that it doesn't use a BeagleBone, Rasberry Pi, or other high-end CPU. The Arduino was chosen because of the huge community expertise and bargain price. But of course you are free to use this project to create your own hardware variant using the CPU you want. After all, this will be an open source project. Here is a photo of the assembled board (click it for larger view). Project background (skip to next post if you hate infomercials): The number of DiY open source projects for R/C and FPV is staggering. Some are software variants for popular open source hardware platforms (i.e., minimOSD). Just as brilliant are those super-charged firmware upgrades that turn low cost devices into magnificent performers (i.e., OpenTX). From my observation many got their start by the availability of some interesting low cost hardware; The software developers recognized the potential of doing something big with the hardware and went to work. Fantastic open source communities have been created this way. We can do that too! Over the years I've dreamed of a flexible hardware platform for a FPV ground station that would be substantially software driven. The common theme in this vision has always involved multiple FPV receivers and OSD features. The idea is to push most of the functionality into the software and minimize the hardware the user would have to build. The reason for this is there are a lot more experienced programmers out there than hardware designers. And best of all, popular open source projects attract the attention of the Chinese cloners; Cheap software-ready hardware is eventually sold to us hobbyists; Then it's all about the software and there is no need to build anything!

  12. Here i will describe NightQuad - quadcopter with great performance It was made mostly for FPV flying. We designed it in winter days and because of mostly bad weather in that days, we put canopy on, so we can fly in not so perfect weather to. We achieved 20min flight time with 5000mAh 3S LiPo which was our goal. It is easy to assemble and great flight performances. Recommended props are 10" and around 5000mAh 3S LiPo. Connections are made on main plate for esc's, motors, videolink ... You can put on it GoPro or any other camera that you use for fpv and fly. Because of winter and early night we made it to be possible to fly at night with special camera (NightCam) with high Power IR LED support. The name came because of that to Here are some pics of it :
