DiY Computer Built Using Relays!

Recommended Posts

I am easily amused by odd electronic projects (should be no surprise -- I have a web site full of them!). Imagine my glee when I came across a web site that is devoted to a home-made computer. Rather than the traditional solid state construction, it was made from hundreds of electromechanical relays. All nicely packaged in several wall cabinets. Modern retro at its best. Very cool indeed.

Details are found here: http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~harry/Relay/

A video of it is here: http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~harry/Relay/ShortMovie.MOV

Photo show Professor Harry Porter III with his relay computer.

Well, there is a video at the site that shows a bunch of lights flashing as a program is running. Although the computer doesn't smoke, the large population of relays make the sound of a steam driven choo-choo train. :)

Sounds like Terry Pratchett visited this site for ideas for the Unseen University computer! Thanks for the heads-up!

Oh boy !!!

Dell Computers better watch out for that guy, if he can build a computer with relays, can you imagine what he could build with few transistors and ICs?!! :o

I think he put a lots of hrs, days , better saying months building it. :(

I rather spend all that time flying. :P
