would paint effect the operation?

Recommended Posts

I am building a patch antenna and happen to have some nice 1/64 sheet steel, it has a thin coat of paint, possibly baked enamel or a powder coat finish. I will obviously have to wire brush the paint off where I'm going to solder but was wondering if the paint will hinder the operation or range in any way? Thank you for the great plans RC-CAM MAN, what a great resource you have provided.

A typical application of enamel or powder coat does not sound like much of a threat. If you really needed to know for sure, you could scrape a bunch off and then put the shavings in the microwave oven. If they get warm, then the material would not be a good choice for the antenna.

Now that is very interesting, I wouldn't have thought along those lines but yes, it makes sense that if the paint got warm via microwaves it would possibly affect the correct operation. Thanks for the educational response!
