poll about how to power supply onboard

Wouldn't it be better to put 2 separate polls, one for "How I'm doing now" and "What I'd want instead"? Surely both are different!

Exact! Take me, I power my stuff with a linear reg for now, because I haven't found THE switcher that would fit my needs best, and I haven't taken the time to do it myself either... but if there was one I'd take it :)

I vote for Main battery with switcher.

(Does not weight much + does not use much power)

But..do the use off main battery make electronic noise?

How about the cost?(Switcher maybe nearly same cost hmm)

yes, the rist is always much higher when using the main battery,

if installed wrong or no special care taken, video distortion is often seen,

noise can jam transmitters and video cam, and even make a gps work with low sat count.

yes switchers are much more complicatied designs,

when many people see the datasheets they dont read all the txt,

so they think it is possible to use a switcher in radio applications

(like RC planes) without extra filters and extra care taken in the design, use and installation, they will crash !

the cost is higher, the power loss is smaller, the noise generated is higher

some applications I recommend lineary regulators:

low current need and low voltage difference from in to out.

they are also used places where a huge heatsink is no problem,

so cost can be keept as low as possible.

some applications I recommend switcher regulators:

battery driven, long life, lower loss, if cost is not extreamly imporant.

if input voltage is under the output voltage, a step-up switcher must be used,

the most common known type is the step-down, from hi to low voltage.

also size and weight can be put into all this:

a cheap but big heatsink might end up as a problem, (on RC planes it does often matter) a maybe switcher solution maybe look bigger, but actually weight much less compared to the same solution made lineary.

if wide range input voltage is needed, one or even two switchers can be used,

in combination, like first step down to say 5V, a 30gram unit can give 3A out from 6V to 50V input, then add a small step-up to give say 12V for cams, a 500mA out solution weight under 10gr.

but again every installation is different, I like to hear about what people do now,

and how they would have done if their choise is free to them.

now the poll main question have been changed,

so it mean "how do you want it to be" ok

NOT "how it is right now"

only if you allready have made your system the way you like it to be

(It where server side, not client site)

Yeah, i see.

Best will be a low weight switcher with low noise, but also some off the hardest to do :D
