regulating voltage question

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm working on a project that has many components that require 12V DC power. One of the components requires 5V, do I need to ad a regulator to bring the V down to 5 from 12? I'm familiar with the Linear Voltage Regulators but amps is not an issue as the components are powered by a 12V auto connection.

Thanks,

~R

Well, if it wants 5v I would say it would be wise to give it 5v. How you get there is up to you, linear vreg, switching vreg, resistors, etc. Heck, I have even seen people use the voltage drop on diodes to get a voltage they need. What are the current requirements of the 5v part?
