Does anybody know how to use a DC brushless motor as an onboard generator. It needs to be able to power a small camera and of course the helicopter electronics?

The motor I'm looking at is a AXI 2212 Series brushless or something like it...

The helicopter is a JR GSR260.

I've seen this done on similar models but can find no details on how to do this/where to get the gears etc.

You need a 3-phase rectifier (or 6 diodes and make it yourself). This will output a DC voltage that varies with the speed of the motor. You will need to add a voltage regulator to get a stable output voltage regardless of the speed. Its type will depend on the motor type and the conditions you will be using it in (RPM range).
